The Steps Toward Freedom: A Journey Through Legacy field trip will presents the rich and colorful history of African Americans in and around Portsmouth. Interpretive guides representing real people from Portsmouth's past lead students through the streets of Olde Towne and into the Underground Railroad Station at Historic Emanuel AME Church, using interpretive storytelling and song to bring history to life against the backdrop of the largest collection of standing period architecture between Alexandria and Charleston.
